Alvin Cabrera, MD, is a radiation oncologist at the Washington Permanente Medical Group (WPMG). He subspecializes in the treatment of central nervous system tumors. Dr. Cabrera previously served as assistant medical director of Radiation Oncology at WPMG and participated in the WPMG Commission on Cancer Committee, Board Development Committee, and President/CEO Search Committee.
Dr. Cabrera graduated magna cum laude with highest honors in psychology at Harvard College, after which he spent a year in the Philippines on a Fulbright Scholarship conducting ethnographic research on Filipinos living with HIV in Manila. He obtained his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and received residency training in diagnostic radiology at Stanford University. Dr. Cabrera then transitioned to radiation oncology residency at Duke University, after which he joined the faculty at the Duke Cancer Institute subspecializing in the treatment of central nervous system and genitourinary tumors with highly conformal radiation techniques.
Dr. Cabrera recently completed a four-year term as vice chair and then chair of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Guidelines Committee, which oversees the creation of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on the treatment of various cancers. He co-chaired the task force that created the ASTRO guideline on radiation therapy for glioblastoma and participated in numerous international guideline task forces, including those for brain metastases, grade 4 diffuse gliomas, and small cell lung cancer. He also chaired the ASTRO Guidelines Methodology Workgroup and served 4 years on ASTRO’s Clinical Affairs and Quality Council. He has presented at many national medical meetings and published dozens of peer-reviewed scientific papers.
